Rooted in Virginia Beach since 1955, F. Ray Shield, Jr. founded Shield Realty Co., Inc. in what was then Princess Anne County. Originally focused on brokering undeveloped land, the company quickly became a trusted name in all types of local real estate. In 1969, Ray’s son Frank Shield took over, later joined by his brother Bill and wife Sara, marking the beginning of a proud family legacy. As the real estate landscape evolved, so did Shield Realty. The company’s deep market knowledge led to the creation of Shield Appraisal Company in the 1970s, supporting banks and government agencies with trusted property valuations. By 1990, Shield Realty expanded again—this time into property management—eventually overseeing hundreds of Veteran Administration (VA)-acquired homes, privately owned rentals, and vacation residences. Now over seven decades strong, guided by President and Principal Broker David Smith, Shield Realty remains an independent, locally-owned firm committed to serving Southeast Virginia with unmatched experience and hometown pride.
